10th Annual Provost Teaching and Learning Symposium
Dear UMBC Faculty,
As we settle into the new academic year, I encourage you to attend UMBC’s 10th Annual Provost Teaching and Learning Symposium on Friday, October 2, from 9:00 am to 3:30 p.m. in the University Center.
This year’s theme is Re-Envisioning General Education: Developing a Unique Foundation to Support Students’ Life-Long Learning, supporting our commitment to re-envisioning UMBC’s general education program.
We are excited to welcome Paul Gaston, PhD, as our keynote speaker. Dr. Gaston, a distinguished fellow in the Office of Curricular, Pedagogical, and Digital Innovation at the American Association of Colleges and Universities, will introduce us to the principles behind general education as an academic program and argue for its value. He will explore how a highly intentional core program, with seamless continuity across majors, and high-impact practices can create a distinct identity (and competitive advantage) for the university.

9:00 a.m. | Gen Ed Primer and Breakfast: Start the day connected and informed about the current GEP landscape with a data overview organized and led by the Re-Envisioning General Education Faculty Core Committee.

10:00 a.m. | Keynote: Dr. Paul Gaston challenges the idea that general education is general.

11:30 a.m. | Lunch and Facilitated Idea-Sharing Session reported out in real time as we begin to explore the future of GEP at UMBC.

2:00 p.m. | Poster & Teaching Tool Showcase showcasing UMBC’s pedagogical innovations
This event is organized and hosted by the Faculty Development Center with support from the Re-envisioning General Education Faculty Core Committee.
I hope faculty of all ranks and from all colleges will join this conversation as we look ahead to a re-envisioned GEP that sets UMBC apart and excites students and faculty alike.
