On October 7, 2024, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released its State of Global Water Resources 2023 report, and Nishan Biswas (617/UMBC) led the chapter on "Reservoirs." As one of the key findings, "Reservoir inflows have followed a similar pattern like the river flow, reducing the amount of water available for communities and ecosystems, further stressing global water resources."
This report is distributed to countries throughout the world, and, as Dr. Biswas stated, it "focuses on the pressing need to manage the world's water resources more effectively." The assessment is available in an interactive format or as a PDF, with sections on River Discharge, Reservoirs and Lakes, Groundwater and Soil Moisture, Evapotranspiration, Terrestrial Water Storage, Snow Cover and Glaciers, and High Impact Events.
