Join us for the PROMISE Toastmasters Club meeting, where you can
develop professionally by practicing communication and leadership
skills.  To get the most out of the meeting, please participate by
signing up for a "meeting role" (see below for list).  Please
post a comment below with the desired meeting role.  Additional information will be emailed to you to help you prepare. 


1. Toastmaster of the Day: The master of ceremony or leader of the
meeting.  Will introduce the speakers and keep the meeting on
track. 
2. Speaker: The person delivering a prepared speech.  Icebreaker
speeches (where you introduce yourself) is 4-6 min.  Other speeches
are typically 5-7 min.  The topic is up to you, but it should be
related to your research.  For example, you can do the introduction
portion of your research talk, or explain the methods section. 
There are two Speakers slots. 
3. Table Topics Master: in charge of the impromptu portion of the
meeting.  Will prepare a 5-7
questions that can be answered in 1-2 minutes.  The topics should be
related to professional development, research methods or job
search.  
4. General Evaluator: in charge of the evaluation portion of the
meeting.  Will evaluate how the meeting went, and will call upon the
evaluation team for their reports. 
5. Speech evaluator: will give an oral evaluation of the prepared
speech (2-3 min), focusing on what the speaker did well and what
they can improve on.  A written evaluation form is provided to help
with the oral evaluation.  We need 2 evaluators. 
6. Timer: in charge of explaining the timing rules, timing all the
speeches, and give the speakers timing signals.
7. Grammarian/Ah counter: Will introduce the "Word of the Day,"
listen to the speaker's use of grammar, count vocal crutches (ah,
so, y'know) and give a report. 

Also, if you have not done so, please fill out the membership
application form and bring a check for $56 payable to Toastmasters
International.  Membership forms will be available at the meeting. 


The PROMISE Toastmasters Club is open to Graduate Students,
Postdoctoral Fellows, Faculty Staff at UMBC and  other members of
USM institutions.
