Announcement: Establishment
of a new professional chapter on campus, Biomedical Engineering
Society (BMES). Biomedical engineering is an unique field in that it is
extremely multidisciplinary and collaborative; this field recruits
students and professionals from departments such as ChemE, CompE, MechE,
Biology, Chemistry and Information Systems to cooperate on fields such
as tissue, genetic, and pharmaceutical engineering, biotechnology,
biomedical devices and instrumentation, medical robotics, and
prosthetics.
Our chapter’s main focus is to educate members regarding the variety of BME related industries in the area by having frequent guest speakers and site visits from industries such as Osiris-stem cell therapy, MedImmune-biopharmaceutical, UMBC incubator, GE Heathcare, etc. Besides educating members, these speaker and visitation events are also used to facilitate students-professional networking and exposure to the array of job opportunities in BME related industries. Also, members will have the opportunity to learn about discoveries and innovations in the BME field through facilitated discussions each meeting. In addition, our chapter is planning on having engineering faculty and student social events, peer mentoring, and outreach and volunteer events.
Both undergraduate and graduate students of UMBC are welcome. Since we are a newly found organization and therefore very member-focused, we strongly encourage our members to suggest site visits and events they would like to engage in. Our first meeting is Wednesday October 5th at noon in ITE229 with subsequent meetings on every other Wednesday. We’ll talk about recent exciting innovations in the BME field, future planned events, visits and speakers, and take suggestions on other events and site visits we can offer.
Please email our secretary Phillip Kang (pkang1@umbc.edu) if you’re interested in joining the club or to be enrolled in our email list. Please mark your calendars for Wednesday Oct 5th!
