Please consider joining three special programs offered by the History Department and UMBC.
1. Accelerated B.A./M.A. Program
History majors considering going on to an M.A. degree in Historical Studies may apply to enter the accelerated B.A./M.A. program. The program allows undergraduate students who take graduate level history courses to have those credits count toward both their B.A. and prospective M.A. degrees at UMBC.
Students should apply in their junior year in order to begin the program during their senior year.
For details, please see: https://history.umbc.edu/undergraduate-program/accelerated-b-a-m-a-program/
2. Departmental Honors
The Department of History offers a program leading to the award of Departmental Honors at graduation.
To qualify for the Departmental Honors program, a student must be a junior with a 3.5 GPA in their history courses. Students with a lower GPA can petition the History Department's Undergraduate Committee for consideration. There are no requirements concerning overall GPA.
Interested students should consult with a History Department faculty advisor no later than the fall semester of their junior year. To enroll in the program, students must submit the Departmental Honors Contract to the Department Chair by the last day of the semester before they will begin their Honors Thesis work (May 15th for work beginning in the following Fall semester).
For more details, please see: https://history.umbc.edu/undergraduate-program/departmental-honors/
3. Undergraduate Research Award
The University offers funding for undergraduate research through its Undergraduate Research Award (URA) scholarships. URAs provide up to $1,500 to undergraduate students to support their research or creative work with a UMBC faculty mentor on an original project. For more information about these scholarships, eligibility and deadlines, go to the University's URA webpage.
For some examples of the research projects history majors have undertaken in the past see the History
section of the University's Undergraduate Research page.
