Professor Rhiannon Dowling, '09 M.A., Historical Studies (Advisor: Kate Brown) earned her PhD in History from the University of California, Berkeley in 2017. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Harriman Institute, Columbia University. Her dissertation entitled “Brezhnev's War on Crime: The Criminal in Soviet Society, 1963-1982" won this year's Robert C. Tucker/Stephen F. Cohen Dissertation Prize. The prize is sponsored by the KAT Charitable Foundation and is awarded annually by the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) for an outstanding English-language doctoral dissertation in Soviet or Post-Soviet politics and history.
