CALL FOR PROPOSALS
The Howard University Office of Faculty Development and the Dresher Center for the Humanities, UMBC invite proposals for:
Uncomfortable Conversations:
Inclusion Imperative Humanities Symposium
10:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M.
via Zoom
We seek proposals for 10-minute panel presentations exploring the complexity and importance of conversations about race, diversity, and inclusion in the academy. We are interested in proposals that
1) address the development or implementation of diverse and inclusive curriculum or pedagogy; 2) center around collaborations between students and faculty and faculty from different institutions; and 3) create institutional structures that facilitate and support courageous conversations.
We also invite proposals for 5-minute “lightning round” presentations on any of the above topics.
In addition, we welcome digital poster exhibits to be featured on the Inclusion Imperative website and displayed during the Symposium.
We invite scholars to consider questions such as:
- Why are difficult conversations about race, the humanities, and inclusion necessary in higher education?
- Why is it important to engage in conversations about the histories of systematic and institutional racism, discrimination, and oppression?
- How does scholarship in the humanities help us discuss race, diversity, inclusion, and social justice?
- What teaching practices help us hold difficult conversations in the classroom and foster dialogue among our students?
- How do we work together with students, community partners, and other members of the public to confront the complexity of diversity and inclusion, and work toward equity and social justice?
This Symposium will provide opportunities for connection among area scholars who share an interest in diversity and inclusion and will allow them to share ideas and resources for engaged pedagogy and teaching towards equity and social justice.
Interested presenters should submit a proposal online through this form by Friday, February 26, 2021 (11:59 P.M.).
