NDLW: Imagine the Future of Online Learning... What Might the Next Generation of Learning Look Like at UMBC?
A National Distance Learning Week Campus Conversation
What might online learning at UMBC look like in 2030? As artificial intelligence reshapes teaching and learning, students seek greater flexibility, and institutions consider new approaches to online and hybrid education, this is an opportunity to look beyond today's technologies and practices and imagine what comes next.
Join Instructional Technology for an interactive campus conversation during National Distance Learning Week. Rather than a traditional webinar or workshop, this session invites faculty and other members of the UMBC community to explore the opportunities, challenges, and choices that may influence the next generation of online learning.
We'll begin with a brief look at trends shaping distance education and then turn the conversation over to participants. Through future-focused scenarios and facilitated discussion, we'll consider questions such as:
-
What will students need and expect from online learning?
-
What makes online teaching effective and sustainable for faculty?
-
What should distinguish a high-quality online learning experience?
-
How might AI and emerging technologies change course design, teaching, assessment, and student support?
-
Where will human connection and instructor presence matter most?
-
What opportunities should UMBC be paying attention to as distance education continues to evolve?
Participants will have opportunities to share experiences, respond to possible futures, and identify ideas and principles worth carrying forward. No expertise in online teaching or artificial intelligence is required -- just curiosity about where online learning is headed and what that future might mean for our community.
This special event is offered as part of National Distance Learning Week, an annual celebration sponsored by the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) to generate awareness and discussion about trends, innovations, and possibilities in distance and digital learning.
