Promoting & Researching Student Engagement in Large Classes
Making Large Classes Small with Student Mobile Devices
Wednesday, March 8, 2017 · 12 - 1 PM
In a recent blog post, University of Michigan Professor Perry Samson suggests faculty should leverage tools on laptops and
other mobile devices that "deliberately engage students in the learning
goals of the course." As co-founder of LectureTools, an interactive
presentation and annotation system that was acquired by Echo360 in
2012, Samson knows a thing or two about engaging students in large
classes. His learning analytics research interests include how to best measure student engagement in
class and to what degree those measures are related to student
learning.
Samson is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences with interactive presentations that demonstrate the active learning approaches he has developed for his larger courses in both extreme weather and entrepreneurship. He also recently presented on this topic at the ELI 2017 Annual Meeting. In addition to serving as Professor of Climate and Space in the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan, Samson is a co-founder of The Weather Underground and Serves as Senior Vice President for Teaching Innovation for Echo360 Inc. Please join us for what promises to be an engaging technology demonstration and discussion about student learning in large lecture courses.
