LGBTQ Faculty and Staff Community Care Circle
Safe + supportive space for those impacted by recent events
Tuesday, October 12, 2021 · 12:30 - 1:30 PM
Recently, UMBC community members have been sharing information about a Change.org petition that calls for the firing of a staff member in the library; the petition (and subsequent myUMBC posts) describe our late colleague Vivien Barrett's story as it relates to this staff member who held a position of authority over Viv.

One post was made via the Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA) myUMBC group. Please read with caution if you so choose (CW: descriptions of suicide, transmisogyny, transphobia, anti-trans bias): https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/umbcydsa/posts/112891
As this posting has been brought to our attention (as well as several other offices), we have been concerned about how our community is impacted; especially those of us who knew Viv and her story. The post brought up a lot of feelings for those of us reading it and we wanted to make space for other folks in our LGBTQ faculty/staff community who may also be sharing in these feelings.
With this in mind, we are hosting a community care circle for all members of the LGBTQ FSA who would like to unpack any feelings or experiences related to this recent happening and also discuss how we can support one another as we navigate microaggressions, invalidation, and bias at our place of work.
This is event will be facilitated by staff co-chair, Amelia Meman (they/them and she/her), Assistant Director of the Women's Center. This meeting will be hosted through Google Meets; joining information below:

Please note: This event is for faculty and staff within the LGBTQ community. By having an affinity-only space, we are trying to ensure confidentiality and center some of those most impacted by the event. If you are an ally or a student, please seek other resources for showing support and/or processing. If you need assistance accessing resources, please email Amelia at meman1@umbc.edu.
