Exploring International Opportunities through Fellowships and Service
This session takes place on Monday, June 29th from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm. We will be joined by Dr. Brian Sounders, Fulbright advisor at UMBC and Dr. Shakira Hobbs, Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering, University of Kentucky.
Dr. Sounders will discuss the Fulbright program that provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or for English Teaching Assistant Programs.
Dr. Hobbs will discuss her non-profit organization biogals. Biogals' mission is to empower womxn of color around the world to bring their ideas to life, engineer dynamic solutions for sustainable development, and establish a legacy of changemakers who embody cultural diversity. Shakira Hobbs uses engineering and sustainability to understand complex problems. As an NSF IGERT-SUN fellow, Shakira was awarded the Competitive Innovations Fund to investigate strategic waste management options for a rural village in Belize. She has presented her work internationally in several countries, and has been featured in Women of Color Magazine, “Today’s STEM Leaders, Tomorrow’s Innovator”. She earned her B.S. degree from University of Maryland, College Park, M.S. from Arizona State University and Ph.D. from Clemson University in Civil Engineering. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor at University of Kentucky in Civil Engineering.
