Title: Equations that move the ocean: applications in ocean heating and productivity
Abstract: Global-scale climate models simulate the oceans and atmosphere by solving for the equations of fluid motion. In this talk, I will introduce key equations used in modeling ocean heating, circulation and mixing. The resulting fields from the physical simulations are then used in calculations of ocean biological productivity. In the upper ocean, algae use sunlight for photosynthesis. Sunlight is also a major source of ocean heating. Water clarity determines the depths where sunlight is available for heating and primary production. I will present results from experimental simulations varying water clarity, demonstrating connections between upper ocean processes and other components of the Earth System.
