Littoral regions, inter-coastal waterways, bays and rivers are much different environments, more complex from open oceans or land regions. Developing, deploying, monitoring and maintaining systems or fields in these regions need technologies that can handle these complexities. Currently there is a lack of tools and technologies to support full systems life cycle from concept development, planning, estimating, logistics, detail design, development, testing, deployment and sustainment. Modeling, simulation and digital twin technologies have advanced with cyber/physical connectivity that provide the promise of novel tools to support an ever-expanding industry. VxSIMTM is one such novel simulation framework. This presentation discusses VxXIMTM and our work with the US Navy to demonstrated utility with advancing robotic, driverless vehicle operations in the surf zone.
Mr. Karl Leodler, Founder and CEO of Dynamic Dimension Technologies, is a seasoned professional with over 30 years of experience developing software, algorithms and applications, and 15+ years working with autonomous ground vehicle systems. Mr. Leodler’s interests include physics-based modeling, simulation, digital twin and the digital thread of connectivity. Mr. Leodler began his career as an Aerospace Engineer, conducting rocket motor design and analysis for the US Navy. This included developing and using tools/methods for FEA, CFD and MBD. In the 1990’s, he found himself incorporating early head mounted displays, developing distributed simulation and virtual reality, before internet and the entertainment industry growth of games. Several of his early works were included in the 1996 US Navy Modeling and Simulation Master Plan and video presentation. The late 90’s was a venture into ship design analysis and manufacturing, which incorporated CAD and CAE, spinning up new industry software for product development and lifecycle management. The 2000’s began the focus with real-time simulations to support development and testing of GNC, autonomy and training applications for these new systems. After founding DDT in 2015, Mr. Leodler has received 8 Small Business Innovative Research awards for the development of VxSIMTM, a next generation simulation framework to usher in an integrated and interactive simulation environment to enable future technology advancements.
