Departmental Volunteers Needed in Over the Next Few Months
participate in Math & Stat outreach
Math & Stat Majors:
There will be a few wonderful opportunities to join with the Math & Stat faculty for outreach activities over the next few months. See my broad post here: https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/mathstat-undergrad/posts/164079
First, the annual UMBC hosted Science Olympiad (January 16th, 7am to 7pm). Math and Stat has participated in the Science Olympiad (https://sciolympiad.umbc.edu/) on campus these past three years. We expect there to be more than 1200 high school students---and the associated parents and teachers---on campus all day on January 16th. If you are in town, we will need help during this very long day. Roughly, there will be three "shifts": morning (7-11am), late morning to early afternoon (11am-3pm, including lunch), and afternoon/early evening (3-7pm). There will be light refreshments in the morning for departmental volunteers. Following this, there will be lunch available from the department---details are forthcoming.
We are asking for Departmental volunteers, not to be confused with general volunteers (see https://sciolympiad.umbc.edu/volunteer/).
Secondly, we anticipate having several off campus and one on campus outreach opportunity during the month of November.
The first of which is Wednesday, November 18th; a tour group from BCC (a large UMBC feeder school) will be on campus. This group comprises their math tutors, which are largely STEM-interested students. They are doing an admissions tour, but we need volunteers for the following: math-stat specific tour guide, math-stat QandA panelist, and finally having a (paid for!) lunch from True Grits with the students.
The time slots are, roughly: 1030-1130am, 1130am-1230pm, 1230-130pm.
We need to have Math/Stat students in all slots, and happy if you are able to attend/participate in multiple slots. It would be wonderful if you could make yourself available for some of these occasiosn. Such outreach is a great way to serve the STEM community and UMBC, as well as generate a service item for your CV/resume.
If you are around during these times and looking to do some outreach, please reach out to Dr. Webster (websterj@umbc.edu).
