Jazz Festival: UMBC Jazz Ensemble with Dr. John Edward Hasse
As part of the Spring 2017 Jazz Festival, the UMBC Jazz Ensemble performs under the direction of Matthew Belzer, with special guest John Edward Hasse, author and Curator of American Music at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History. Dr. Hasse will give a multimedia presentation with live performances by the UMBC Jazz Ensemble.
John Edward Hasse is a museum curator, author, and lecturer. Since 1984, he has served as Curator of American Music at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History, where he has curated exhibitions on Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Ray Charles, and founded the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and international Jazz Appreciation Month. He also a leader of Smithsonian Music. Hasse's books include Beyond Category: The Life and Genius of Duke Ellington, Discover Jazz (co-editor), and Jazz: The Smithsonian Anthology (co-author). He has received two Grammy Award nominations and two ASCAP Deems Taylor Awards. Hasse has lectured on leadership, the arts, and music in twenty countries on six continents.
The UMBC Jazz ensemble is a large jazz group dedicated to the professional training and creative development of its members. Throughout the year, the group performs at concerts, special events and festivals. Student composers and arrangers have the opportunity to have their music read, performed and recorded by the group.
Admission: $15 general admission, $10 seniors, $5 students, free for UMBC Music majors and Music faculty/staff. Tickets are available at MissionTix and at the box office.

The Jazz Festival begins on Friday, March 3 at 12 p.m. with a lecture by John Edward Hasse on Curating American Jazz; continues on Friday, March 10, with the Harry Appelman Trio, and concludes on Saturday, March 11, with the MMEA All-State Jazz Band.
