TITLE: The use of heralding and post-selection in quantum communications
ABSTRACT:Quantum optics is a powerful tool for quantum communications. It has the unique advantage that photons can travel relatively large distances in optical fibers before loss becomes a significant issue. Many techniques have been developed to improve the efficiency and versatility of the necessary components, even extending beyond the realm of communications and into quantum logic. Among them is an important pair of techniques known as post-selection and heralding, which exploit the probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics to achieve counterintuitive results. In this proposal, we show how post-selection can be used to attenuate states without loss of information. We propose to further investigate these techniques for use in quantum key distribution, quantum logic, and more beyond what is discussed here.
