Dr. Markos Georganopoulos, an Associate Professor in the Physics Department, has been awarded (PI) a $400K, three-year NASA grant to study the nature of large scale relativistic jets in quasars like the one shown above (Uchiyama 2006). In collaboration with co-investigators Dr. Eileen Meyer of UMBC and the Space Telescope Institute, and Prof. Eric Perlman of the Florida Institute of Technology, he will use theoretical techniques introduced by the PI to analyze quasar jet observations from a multitude of orbiting and ground observatories to find if these jets accelerate particles up to energies of 100 TeV, a few times larger that those achieved by the CERN large hadron collider.
