Crime Alerts are issued by the UMBC Police to alert the campus community of incidents on campus.
Incidents: Arson
Locations: Albin O. Kuhn Library & Meyerhoff Chemistry Building
Date/time: December 16, 2021 at 3:56am & December 19, 2021 at 7:38pm and 9:25pm
On December 16, 2021 at 3:56 a.m., UMBC Police responded to two fires that had been set in the Albin O. Kuhn Library.
On December 19, 2021 at 7:38 p.m., UMBC Police responded to a fire that had been set in the Meyerhoff Chemistry Building. At 9:25 p.m. on the same date, UMBC Police responded to an additional fire that had been set in the Albin O. Kuhn Library.
The UMBC Police Department is working with the Maryland State Fire Marshal to investigate these incidents. If you have information relevant to these incidents, please contact UMBC Police at 410-455-5555. As a response to these cases, we are taking the following actions:
- CCTV footage is being reviewed from several different areas of campus.
- UMBC Police has increased patrols in buildings, especially in the evening hours.
- The Baltimore County Police will temporarily increase their presence on the interior of campus.
Perpetrators are responsible for criminal behavior. The following safety tips can reduce your vulnerability and help us with this investigation:
Report suspicious behavior or fire immediately by calling the UMBC Police Department at 410-455-5555 or 911. Contact UMBC Police even if a small fire has been extinguished.
In the event of a fire, do not stop to collect personal belongings and do not re-enter the building. Do not try to extinguish large fires alone.
