Dear UMBC Community,
I am writing to share that as we continue to monitor campus for attempts of motor vehicle thefts, we have learned that some criminals have found ways of creating duplicate key fobs that allow them to access vehicles. Unfortunately, catching a criminal who is using a duplicate key fob to commit motor vehicle theft is very challenging, but we do want to help our community remain as vigilant as possible.
As a reminder, the UMBC Police Department is giving away free steering wheel locks. Steering wheel locks are a known deterrent to vehicle theft. The steering wheel locks are free of charge and any member of our campus community with university identification may obtain a lock by visiting the police station at any time.
As always, we remind you to secure your vehicles by locking them and refrain from leaving your valuables inside of your vehicle in plain view. Please continue to remain vigilant of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity to UMBC Police by calling 410-455-5555.
The safety and security of our campus community is our top priority. Thank you for your part in helping us deter and prevent further incidents of theft.
Stay safe!
