The University of Maryland Department of Orthopaedics Shoulder & Elbow Research Internship
provides pre-medicine gap year students with a unique early-career opportunity starting in
January 2026. This funded program is designed for students pursuing a career in medicine who
are seeking hands-on clinical experience, strong mentorship, and substantial research exposure.
We are seeking a detail-oriented, thorough, and organized individual to join our team. The
research assistant will gain experience in Shoulder and Elbow clinical research, including patient
recruitment, follow-up coordination, and database management using REDCap. The position
also involves close collaboration with medical students, residents, and attending surgeons on
research projects.
Under the mentorship of Dr. Mohit Gilotra, a Shoulder and Elbow orthopaedic surgeon, the
research assistant will receive guidance in developing and publishing research manuscripts,
presenting findings, and strengthening their medical school application.
A one-year commitment is required, though a two-year commitment is recommended for those
seeking deeper research involvement and authorship opportunities.
Because this role involves working across multiple clinic sites, applicants must have reliable
transportation and be able to drive to different locations when working with various physicians.
See the flyer for details.
