We are thrilled to announce the partnership between the National Science Foundation (NSF), The US Department of Education, and the UMBC McNair Scholars Program. All attendees will have the opportunity to hear directly from NSF about opportunities for them as undergraduates and even beyond. There will be a Q&A session at the end of the session!
Please note that NSF funding is also available to social science major, so this opportunity is not restricted to STEM majors!

Dr. Joel Schildbach has been working as a program director in the Division of Graduate Education at the National Science Foundation since 2021. He joins DGE from Johns Hopkins University where he is a professor in the Department of Biology. Prior to joining NSF, Dr. Schildbach served for 6 years as vice dean for undergraduate education in Hopkins’ Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Schildbach’s research focuses on genetic, biochemical, and structural aspects of plasmid and phage biology. He earned his B.A. in Microbiology from Oregon State University, was awarded an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, and pursued his graduate education at Harvard University.
Dr. Narcrisha Norman is a Program Director whose portfolio includes the Graduate Fellowship Research Program (GRFP) and the Racial Equity in STEM Education Program Description. Dr. Norman participates in several cross agency and cross directorate initiatives. Her primary service is within the Division of Graduate Education (DGE) of the Education and Human Resources Directorate (EHR) at the National Science Foundation (NSF). Prior to NSF Dr. Norman served as a Research Coordinator and an Associate Professor in the College of Aeronautics in the College of Aeronautics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s – Worldwide campus. Dr. Norman enjoys contributing to STEM research and education in a variety of ways. She volunteers as a NASA Solar System Ambassador (SSA) and has also contributed as a Senior Research Associate in the– Applied Fluids & Thermal Engineering Laboratory (@FTERLab) at Howard University.
