George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government is hosting an exciting opportunity for students interested in careers in public policy or international affairs.
In collaboration with PPIA, a not-for-profit organization that has been supporting efforts to increase diversity in graduate studies in public policy, international affairs, and public service for over 40 years, the weekend serves as an opportunity to provide students who are traditionally underrepresented in public policy and international affairs careers with hands-on exposure to thought leaders and professionals in Policy Communications.
Schar School PPIA Public Service Weekend
What is it? The Public Service weekend is a 3-day weekend, focusing on “Policy Communications.” Attendees will arrive to the Arlington campus for a Friday evening reception and opening plenary, have a full-day of programming on Saturday, and conclude on Sunday with more hands-on lessons and an opportunity to engage with faculty and current graduate students. Students selected to participate will be provided with accommodation and meals for the weekend.
The program will focus on: (1) writing commentaries, (2) conducting broadcast interviews, and (3) briefing policymakers. There is no previous policy communications experience or background required.
The weekend is hosted by Professor Justin Gest, Director of the Schar School’s Master of Public Policy program and author of Mass Appeal: Communicating Policy Ideas in Multiple Media.
