"The Ideological Politics of Charter Schools"
Charter schools, like many other policy areas, have been subject to rigorous debate ever since their inception. In this talk, I broadly cover three different dimensions of their ideological politics. First, based on in-depth interviews with activists both for and against a specific school choice proposal in East Nashville, I investigate the perspectives of citizens on the ground. Second, I use computational topic modelling methods to examine the trends in charter school coverage across thousands of news articles written over the past 25 years. Lastly, I employ an exercise inspired by methods in political psychology to understand the kinds of choices people make when learning about charter school policy.
