Networking Meeting
AKA: Learn how computers talk to each other
Friday, November 5, 2021 · 4 - 6:30 PM
Hi all,
It's time to fulfill the (literally) one promise I made as President.
Tomorrow will be the official SAD networking meeting. Our goal will be a crash course of basically everything networking-related, from the physical layer (think Ethernet cables, MACs, bits and bytes) to the network layer (IP addresses and routing) to the transport layer (TCP, UDP, sockets) to the application layer (HTTP, DNS, DHCP, etc.)
That's a pretty lofty goal, but we think it's well worth it - networking is hugely important to modern software development and system administration. We're going to try our best to squeeze it into the typical two hours, but we're probably going to run overtime. If needed, we might finish off at a future meeting.
Bring your laptops! The bulk of the meeting will be presentation-oriented, but we have some very interesting interactive/workshop bits, where you will actually get to build your own simulated network using real enterprise firmware (GNS3 or Packet Tracer, haven't decided yet). Also, having Wireshark installed on your laptops would probably be good.
The meeting will, as always, be hybrid, meaning you can either attend in-person or virtually. If you're comfortable with
in-person, come to ILSB237 at 4PM. If you prefer to meet virtually, join the Jitsi room at 4PM: https://meet.jit.si/SADClubFall2021Hybrid
If you have any questions at all, feel free to put a message in the Discord or email nbura1@umbc.edu. Hope to see you all there!
