The Greater Baltimore Urban League
The Saturday Leadership Program comes to UMBC!!!
Saturday, November 1, 2014 · 8 AM - 2 PM
On Campus
The Greater Baltimore Urban League's Saturday Leadership Program (SLP) serves 8-12th grade students from underserved communities throughout Baltimore. Now in its second year, the program takes place at local colleges and universities to introduce students to these institutions of higher education. SLP participants have opportunities to build upon their strengths and passions. Despite certain personal challenges, they will learn that a degree is attainable and important on a path to success. SLP participants attend middle and high schools throughout the Baltimore region.
This Saturday, November 1st, approximately 100 students (8th-10th graders) will visit UMBC. This visit is co-sponsored by the Meyerhoff Scholars Program, UMBC’s Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation, and The Shriver Center. Keynote speaker is Dr. Shawn Bediako, Associate Professor, Psychology. The theme is “Hands-On Banking Financial Literacy” (supported by Wells Fargo).
UMBC students are being recruited throughout the day, this Saturday, November 1st, 8am-2 pm. The greatest need is during lunch in True Grit’s, where SLP participants can connect with UMBC students to further discuss financial literacy workshops, or learn more about respective college experiences.
