UMBC is proud to announce the first Disability Studies course, which is being offered by Academic Engagement & Transition Programs under Undergraduate Academic Affairs GEP. This course will satisfy a Culture or Social Sciences GEP requirement.
FYS 106 - Introduction to Disability Studies will be offered in Fall 2023 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:00-2:15 PM.
Topics will include:
- An introduction to Disability Studies as an academic discipline
- Social constructs of disability
- History of disability in North America. Historical review will include indigenous peoples, colonialism, and eugenics up to the passage of the ADA
- Arts and literature in disability
- Ableism and language use regarding disability
- Disability as diversity/culture and identity
- Disability rights and legislation
