The Impact of Shale Gas on the Clean Energy Sectors
Dicussion on clean energy with entrepreneurs and experts
There will be a meeting of entrepreneurs involved in renewable energy to discuss the impact of abundant shale gas. The objective is to discuss how the emergence of cheap shale gas is changing the economics for clean energy such as solar, wind, biofuel, waste-to-energy, and others.
We expect 40 to 50 people because we believe this is a topic of broad interest and concern among many cleantech entrepreneurs.
Time and place:
• March, Thursday 28, 2013, starting at 1:30 pm
• Large seminar room at UMBC’s energy incubator (CETI); i.e., UMBC’s Tech Center at South Campus.
Meeting objectives:
• Discuss the economics of shale gas.
• Discuss the environmental issues related to extraction of shale gas.
• Understand how availability of cheap gasmight impact financing of renewable energy (solar, wind, bio-fuel, …) generation.
Participants:
• Clean energy entrepreneurs who want to know how cheap shale gas will impact the ability to their finance projects.
Issues:
• How much gas do we expect in the next 10 to 20 years?
• What is the expected long-term price of shale gas?
• Are the environmental concerns about fracking sufficiently serious to change the volume of shale gas drilling?
• Maybe we should promote the idea that gas should subsidize the renewable energy?
• Can shale gas and renewable energy be complimentary?
• There is already a trend towards converting and retiring old coal-burning power plants with gas burning plants. Is this good?
Agenda:
1:30 pm Doors open & networking.
2:00 pm Meeting objectives by Bjorn Frogner.
2:10 pm Panel discussions:
• Doug Hinrichs, Solar & Geothermal Program Manager, Maryland Energy Administration. “Perspectives on how natural gas and renewable energies can complement each other.”
• Arjun Makhijani, President, Institute for Energy and Environmental Research:
“Road Map to zero carbon and zero nuclear. How does shale gas change the roadmap?”
• A person from (or associated with) UMBC campus.
• I expect changes in the list of panelists and their topics as we get closer to the meeting.
3:40 pm Q&A discussion.
4:15 pm Networking.
