GBM: THREAD Lunch and Learn
We have a community organization coming in to share the work they are doing in our area! Check out this short blurb and we'll see you there!
Come one, come all! Join us for a Lunch and Learn with Thread on Monday, November 4, 2024, from 12:00-1:00 pm! We are incredibly excited to offer the UMBC student body the opportunity to get to know an organization that is making a continuous impact in the lives of Baltimore's young people and learn how you can get involved! As a special treat, the Thread team will lead us through an experiential activity aimed at fostering deeper connections with each other. We look forward to seeing you there!
About Thread: For 20 years, Baltimore-based non-profit Thread has worked to support young people and build a more connected community where everyone can thrive. Thread enrolls 9th grade students who rank academically in the bottom 25% of their class and face an abundance of challenges outside the classroom. Each young person is matched with a group of volunteers who build relationships with their young person and each other to form a deeply woven extended network of care and support. Together, they define goals, overcome barriers, and consistently defy the odds.
What Is the Impact? In Baltimore City, historically only 6% of 9th grade students with GPAs of less than 1.0 graduate in four years. But in Thread, 79% of our young people have graduated from high school. Thread’s unique 10-year commitment to its young people means that the impact goes beyond high school. For those who have been in Thread for a decade, 62% have received a two- or four-year college degree or certification.
