Disability in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
a Wellness Wednesday event
Wednesday, March 1, 2023 · 12 - 1 PM
Online
This workshop will focus on Disability as Culture and the need to include disability in the Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) discourse. A Chronicle of Higher Education article by Lennard Davis (2011) explicitly asked, “Why is disability missing from the discourse of diversity?” Scholars and practitioners argued this is reflective of disability’s position as the “Last civil rights movement,” citing that better-known groups have had long(er) established legal statutes, fields of study, scholarship, and activism. Yet, disability studies contend this exclusion is not an issue of timing but structural inequality (Davis, 2015). We will look at disability using a cultural lens to increase understanding of disability as diversity.
Michael Canale has been a sign language interpreter for three decades and a disability professional for nearly as long. Michael is the assistant director of Student Disability Services at UMBC. Mr. Canale's area of interest is disability studies and disability in the discourse of Equity and Inclusion. Currently, Mr. Canale is developing a Disability Studies course for UMBC.
