Understanding Racial Microaggressions
Diversity Workshop For Faculty and Staff
This workshop will focus on microaggressions across multiple dimensions of diversity (e.g. gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, etc.) with a specific focus on racial mircoaggressions. In this 1-hour workshop, there will be coverage of 1) definition of terms, 2) examples of microaggressions within the UMBC community (gathered by campus climate surveys and anonymous contributions), and 3) the experience of commission (intent vs. ignorance) and victims (primary vs. secondary). Discussion will center on strategies for interrupting microaggressions, acknowledging power differences in commission and responses, emphasizing need for self-care of victims, and underscoring the importance of allyship and advocacy.
