UMBC Counseling Center Anti-Asian Racism and Violence Resource List
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Counseling Center reaffirms our support for Asian and Asian American students, faculty, and staff and stands in solidarity with the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community in the wake of rising anti-Asian racism and xenophobia. We condemn the scapegoating and dehumanization that has led to an increase in violence against Asian Americans and contributed to the murder of eight people (including six Asian women) in Georgia on March 16, 2021. We also want to highlight the connection between mass violence and misogyny that this horrible act of violence embodies, specifically as it relates to the fetishizing of Asian women. We recognize the far-reaching emotional and physical impact of experiencing such racial and cultural trauma. The Counseling Center is here to support students and can be reached at 410-455-2472 to schedule an appointment or for outreach-related requests. If you have mental health concerns outside of regular business hours and wish to speak with someone from our After-Hours Support Line, please call 410-455-3230. Please see our previous statement regarding Covid-19 and xenophobia, originally released April 2020, as well as the statement released by the office of Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion, and Belonging (i3b) as we echo many of their sentiments. Below you can find a list of resources, action items, and information that addresses the current anti-Asian racism and xenophobia against the APPI community. Many of the resources included were adapted from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Asian and Asian American Faculty and Staff Council post “Action items and Resources Against Anti-Asian Racism”. Please refer to their original post for additional information.
