UMBC today announced the launch of "Sam," an autonomous AI Virtual Engagement Officer (VEO). Developed through a groundbreaking partnership with Givzey, a leader in AI solutions for non-profits, this initiative marks a new era in higher education philanthropy and alumni engagement.
The launch is a direct reflection of UMBC’s decades-long legacy as a trailblazer in AI research, applications, and education.
“The higher education landscape is changing rapidly, and UMBC must innovate to meet the demands of our growing community,” said Patrick Roche, UMBC Vice President of Institutional Advancement. “We believe technology is the key to unlocking the full potential of our team’s efforts, which is why we couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with Givzey to launch our Virtual Engagement Officer. This cutting-edge AI will allow us to dramatically expand our reach and deliver the type of personalized outreach that directly fuels our mission of inclusive excellence."
As UMBC continues to reach new heights—including welcoming the largest incoming class in school history for two consecutive years—the demand for meaningful engagement has never been higher. Sam will manage an inaugural portfolio of highly engaged alumni, providing personalized updates on campus news, faculty research, and upcoming events.
“Sam will help us initiate, improve, and sustain relationships in a way that was never before possible, enhancing the efforts of our current team, and ensuring that even more members of our community feel connected to the amazing work happening here at UMBC,” Roche added. “The goal is not to automate relationships or replace meaningful human interaction. It is to provide timely, personalized updates and information so our staff can spend more time in direct conversations with alumni.”
Alumni and members of the public are invited to learn more about this initiative and meet Sam by visiting umbcretrievers.ai.
