Happy Monday: Honoring the Potential

Dear UMBC Community,

Last week, we celebrated 20 years of the Sherman Scholars Program and the 345 teachers it has prepared to serve children in and around Baltimore. It was a wonderful celebration that brought together alumni, current students, faculty, staff, and friends who have made this extraordinary work possible.

What stayed with me most was hearing our current student teachers and alumni—some of the very best teachers in Baltimore—speak with such conviction about the potential they see in every child and the profound difference a great teacher can make in a life.

That same belief is at the heart of Honoring the Potential, a commitment in our new UMBC strategic plan, Bold Moves. Building upon the remarkable 20-year legacy of the Sherman Scholars Program, we will work with community partners to change the odds for children and families in the communities surrounding our campus.

It was truly inspiring to see how many guests embraced this vision and were eager to help us bring it to life.
