Restorative Leadership and Supervision
The 80/20 Principle: Foundations for a Restorative UMBC
Wednesday, March 25, 2026 · 12 - 1 PM
Did you know? Restorative practices are most effective when the majority of effort—about 80 %—is focused on proactively building relationships, community, and trust, not just responding after harm happens.
Join Dr. Samantha Smith from Indiana University for interactive learning, reflection and tools for daily practice.
At the end of this session, participants will
- Understand the principles and philosophy of restorative leadership: Participants will be able to articulate the core values underpinning restorative approaches, and explain how these principles shift traditional power dynamics in supervision and team management.
- Apply restorative practices to supervisory conversations and conflict: Participants will demonstrate the ability to use restorative frameworks (such as strengths-based questioning, active listening, and harm-repair dialogue) to navigate difficult supervisory conversations, address workplace conflict, and support staff through performance concerns in a way that prioritises relationship and growth.
- Foster a restorative team culture through reflective leadership practice: Participants will identify practical strategies for embedding restorative values into their day-to-day leadership, including examples like how they model accountability, create space for honest dialogue, and build team environments where people feel safe to raise concerns, make mistakes, and contribute meaningfully.
