Classical Music in the Recital Hall
The Department of Music presents flutist Lisa Cella in concert with pianist Shannon Wettstein. Their program will feature Mark Osborn's Virtue for flute, piano and tape, Brian Ferneyhough's Four Miniatures and Kazuo Fukushima's Pieces (3) from "Chu-u".
As a champion of contemporary music, Lisa Cella (associate professor of Music at UMBC) has performed throughout the United States and abroad. She is Artistic Director of San Diego New Music and a founding member of its resident ensemble NOISE. With NOISE she has performed across the country premiering works of young composers. NOISE was also a featured ensemble at the Acousmania Festival in Bucharest, Romania in May of 2004, an invited ensemble for the Pacific Rim Festival at the University of California, Santa Cruz in May of 2005 and in residence at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee in 2007. Dr. Cella is a co-director of the soundON Festival of Modern Music in San Diego and NOISE is its resident ensemble.
Dr. Cella is a founding member of the flute duo inHale, a group dedicated to developing challenging and experimental repertoire for the flute duo. inHale was an invited ensemble at the National Flute Association Convention in San Diego in August of 2006 and has performed over the last three years in Italy, Virgina, New York City, and Los Angeles. She is also a member of C2, a touring flute and cello duo that has held residencies at Stanford University and the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. She is a founding member of UMBC’s faculty contemporary music ensemble, Ruckus.
Shannon Wettstein, pianist, has premiered numerous new works throughout the United States and internationally, including performances in New York's Lincoln Center, Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the New Zealand Embassy in Washington D.C. and the Japan America Theater in Los Angeles. Awards include the 2003 and 2008 American Composers Forum Commissioning Grant, the Merle Montgomery Grant given by Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation and grants from the Minnesota Arts Council. Her solo CD is on the Centaur label; other recordings are available on the Tzadik, Innova, and Mode labels. A new CD of music by Xenakis will soon be released by Mode. She holds a doctorate of music arts from the University of California, San Diego, a bachelor of music from the University of Kansas and a Master of Music degree (honors) from New England Conservatory. Her teachers have included Aleck Karis, Stephen Drury, Sequiera Costa, Richard Angeletti and Claude Frank. She is on the music faculty of Augsburg College.
