Internships with Strong Schools Maryland General Overview Candidacy for an internship with Strong Schools Maryland is indicative of an individual’s personal commitment to the attainment of educational equity for students, as well as to building power with school communities. An internship experience with Strong Schools Maryland will put participants in spaces to learn from a large swath of intergenerational partners and experts from around the state. It is an exciting opportunity to complicate everything “known” about public education, public policy, power building, and politics.
For Partner Organizations Strong Schools Maryland seeks to contribute to the capacity of our partner organizations and the communities they serve as a routine aspect of working together (i.e., offering resume critiques, mock interviews, speaking engagements, informal training, etc).
Internship Opportunities
Candidates should be available for about 20 hours each week. Each internship runs for 12-15 weeks with the possibility of some irregular evenings/weekend hours, particularly during the
Legislative Advocacy and Organizing Internship.

1. Policy Advocacy and Organizing Internship: Fall Semester
Description: Strong Schools Maryland Policy Advocacy and Organizing Interns will work
under the guidance of staff to support policy advocacy and organizing initiatives.
Objectives & Learning:
● Policy Advocacy (7 hours/week)
○ Monitor policy implementation in specified region of Maryland○ Contribute to development of state legislative agenda○ Attend meetings○ Support staff in meeting with elected officials
● Organizing (10 hours/week)
○ Lead a Team of 10 on home campus○ Meet with Team Leaders and allies across the state to determinepolicy needs○ Aid in Team Leader recruitment and training○ Support team members in navigating the General Assembly’sprocesses to make their voices heard
● Nonprofit Administration (3 hours/week)
○ Support organizational systems-building and maintenance○ Administrative duties as assigned
2. Legislative Advocacy and Organizing Internship: Spring Semester
Description: Strong Schools Maryland Legislative Advocacy and Organizing Interns will work under the guidance of staff to support legislative advocacy and organizing
initiatives.
Objectives & Learning:
● Legislative Advocacy (10 hours/week)
○ Support Strong Schools Maryland’s efforts in the MarylandGeneral Assembly○ Conduct research, including monitoring hearings○ Track legislation aligned with state legislative priority agenda,draft and submit testimony○ Accompany staff meeting with elected officials
● Organizing (7 hours/week)
○ Lead a Team of 10 on home campus○ Assist with communicating information about the progression ofpriority legislation to Team Leaders and allies○ Coordinate testimony○ Execute legislative strategy
● Nonprofit Administration (3 hours/week)
○ Support organizational systems-building and maintenance○ Administrative duties as assigned
