Hello All,
Our By My Side documentary short is happening Monday November 11th from noon-1p in the Admin Lecture Hall (101) We are excited for a great event - RSVP for this brief film and discussion here: https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/accessibility/events/135797
Please share this opportunity widely as it intersects with many elements of identity and inclusion with academic and artistic elements beyond our department (see description in bold below) perhaps you have a class or a student group with an overlapping project or interest in the lived experiences of veterans, mental health disability, trauma survivors, bringing mental health services to under-served communities, service dogs, experimental film, accessibility, and the evolving policies and practices that inform these lived experiences.
By My Side is a 30-minute documentary that provides an intimate portrait of three veterans navigating their world with PTSD who share their pain, fear and the experience that they have lost time and love that may never return. All three found hope - in the heart of a loyal and well-trained service dog. Through intimate interviews and revealing footage, the film demonstrates how these dogs help mitigate the trauma and scarring experienced by these veterans and others who partner with service dogs. While the film is not rated, some of the experiences related briefly mention combat, physical and mental injury, sexual assault, and suicidal ideation - the focus is on the partnership with service dogs.
A brief panel discussion with the audience will follow the film screening.
The film is captioned, audio description and ASL are available upon request, and the lecture hall has a range of accessible seating options. For additional inquiries about access or accommodation, email slazar@umbc.edu with "By My Side" in the subject line.
Organized by Accessibility and Disabilities Services, in partnership with Student Affairs' Veteran and Military Affiliated Services.
