We send our hearty congratulations to GWST alum Kevin Eliot Jayce, who just graduated from the Masters of Library and Information Science program at University of Maryland. Kevin's program plan focused on two core components: literacy for children / teens as well as diverse populations + inclusive services. The program allowed him to focus projects on marginalized groups: expanding services to Spanish-speakers, a digital literacy lesson for ex-offenders and pathfinders for trans* youth.
Kevin started a job before graduation at the Reisterstown branch of Baltimore County Public Library as a shelver then progressed up to a circulation assistant and then a part-time librarian. Kevin was promoted to be a full time librarian at the Loch Raven branch where I do a lot of the outreach work to different organizations in the community. Kevin has been doing regular story times at our Head Start, visiting the PAL Center to meet kids, making visits to the WIC office to speak with parents and other organizations. Kevin is also on a small team working on a systemwide training for initially managers, then all staff, that focuses on creating a discussion around diversity and how the library could be more inclusive overall.
We're proud to see Kevin using all those GWST skills to make the library an even more inclusive space for all. Kudos!
