UMBC Prescription Drug Take Back
Get Rid of Your Old/Expired Prescription Medications
UMBC is hosting a Prescription Take-Back on Friday, April 25th and Saturday, April 26th for the entire campus community and greater public. You may drop off your unused, unwanted or expired prescription medications to a drop off box on:
- Friday, April 25th (11am-1pm) @ Commons Main Street
- Saturday, April 26th (8am-4pm) @ UMBC Police Station
The National Prescription Take-Back Day falls on April 26th and is a program sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
According to the 2011 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), twice as many Americans regularly abused prescription drugs than the number of those who regularly used cocaine, hallucinogens, heroin, and inhalants combined. That same study revealed more than 70 percent of people abusing prescription pain relievers got them through friends or relatives, a statistic that includes raiding the family medicine cabinet.
The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.
To find a drop off location closer to your place of residence, a list of sites will be posted starting April 1 on this site: http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/index.html
