The Alan and Wendy Wilson Innovation Lab is proud to welcome The Yonder Cabinet to the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery! Please join us for an artist talk and light refreshments on Thursday, November 14th between 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM in our makerspace, located on the first floor just past the main circulation desk.
The Yonder Cabinet is a collaborative installation project that combines the love of the written word, visual art, and fantastic places. Artists Kelley Bell and Melissa Penley Cormier originally conceived of The Yonder Cabinet as an exercise of the imagination in the midst of the COVID-19 epidemic. Much as the Cabinets of Wonder or wunderkammer from the 16th century collected and housed objects and specimens from far off places while telling stories of science and the natural world, The Yonder Cabinet began as an empty card catalog cabinet and took on new life as the artists filled two of the drawers with dioramas drawn from their favorite literature, enabling them to “travel” to these literary settings at at time of limited mobility.
The Innovation Lab will host workshops in the spring inviting members of the AOK community to make their own drawer dioramas. Details will appear here in the near future! In the meantime, we hope you will visit Kelley Bell and friends at the reception.
