The Least Important Post
Stop, GrammarTime
Greetings:
I have a grammar question. When one clicks above on the 'Members' tab,
one will notice a message to the right that states the following: "You can
not leave this group since you were automatically joined."
I am wondering, was the "can not" in this statement a purposeful
decision or an accident? If the former,
I would be very interested to know the rationale for the decision. While many say that there is no difference in
meaning between ‘can not’ and ‘cannot’, there can also be a second meaning of
the first wording: an emphasis on the ‘not’ (similar to how it could be used in
speech), such as, ‘You can NOT leave!’
Readers of this text could interpret the meaning as an emphatic ‘not’
instead of either an outdated version of ‘cannot’ or merely a typo.
I both can not and cannot wait to read any comments regarding this least important post.
Sincerely,
Tym Wowk
