Honoring Dr. King & the Legacy of the Civil Rights Movement
Special Digital Storytelling Workshop in DC
Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 9:30 AM - Monday, August 5, 2013 at 1 PM
Off Campus
Fifty years ago, my parents were both active in the Civil Rights
Movement in the United States. My mother worked across the South trying
to end the voter suppression of the Poll Tax; my father helped working
people stand up to unjust labor practices; both were part of the build
up to the March for Jobs and Justice in 1963. What I would give for my
children to hear their stories of that time. Sadly, both are long gone.
It is in their memory, and in the memory of millions like them,
that I will be leading a unique intergenerational workshop focused on
social justice themes in Washington, D.C. It will be held on August 3-5, 2013 (Saturday-Monday) from 9:30 am - 5:30 pm on Saturday and Sunday and 9:30 am - 1:00 pm on Monday. I would like you to join me there.
We invite parents and children, grandparents and grandchildren,
any older generation person with any youth to come to a special
two-for-one priced workshop to celebrate Civil Rights during the month
of the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington on the National Mall.
This intergenerational project will provide an opportunity for a shared
story, using Washington, D.C. and all its history as a backdrop, all
produced on the iPad.
Workshop attendees can come as partnered pairs (two people
sharing one story) for the regular individual price of $795. And for
$1095, CDS will provide your team with a 16GB WiFi-only iPad Mini with
appropriate apps for the project. We have a few partial and full
scholarships available.
This is an amazing way to be part of history and to build connections within your own family.
