Webinar: Catch a Rising Star
This webinar will focus on the challenge of intervening with senior leaders who have seemingly arrived in their positions despite a pattern of experiential learning gaps and EQ deficiencies that now threaten their continued success as leaders. In the classic Harvard Business Review article entitled The Young and the Clueless, my colleagues (Kathy Kram & Sharon Ting) and I discussed the perils of rapidly promoting leaders in this manner and outlined strategies for preventing the problem by: interrupting their ascent; holding them accountable; developmental assignments; experiential learning and career pathing, etc.
In this webinar, adapted from an article in progress, Dr. Bunker will focus on successful efforts to utilize deep coaching and retro-reflective learning to rescue young and clueless leaders (Y&C) who are already occupying senior-level positions. These are generally talented and motivated executives who are worthy of an intensive coaching intervention effort; but who, if left unattended, can be quite destructive to themselves, to coworkers, and to their organizations.
Participants Will Learn
- Learn how Y&C executives have often evaded the emotional learning that comes from having to “go against the grain” in diverse and challenging learning assignments extended over time.
- Understand the risk having Y&C leaders operating at very senior levels where the emotional intelligence gaps have much greater impact.
- Learn the challenge of crafting a provocative a coaching intervention that simultaneously keeps the person in the organization and maintains their sense of self – while at the same time exposes the need for deep EQ learning and maximizes the impact of powerful learning and ongoing accountability.
- Learn how comprehensive total-life data, deep coaching, and retro-reflective learning can be used to stimulate learning readiness and enhance growth in emotional competence and overall leader success and impact.
- Recognize that coaching needs to come from savvy and experienced psychological professionals (typically from the outside) who bring experience with emotional learning skills, coupled with the credibility and pedigree to guide, support, interpret, and confront these challenging clients.
