These are just some of the questions we hope to delve into at UMBC’s Healthy Masculinity Campus Conversation on Tuesday, February 4th at 6pm. This campus conversation, hosted by UMBC’s Women Center in partnership with Men Can Stop Rape, and UMBC’s Student Judicial Programs and Division of Student Affairs' Relationship Violence Awareness & Prevention Program, will bring students, faculty, staff together to engage in honest and meaningful conversation about healthy and unhealthy masculinity and its impact on our community through the art of storytelling.
The Women’s Center invites all members of the UMBC community to be a part of this important conversation. The evening will start off with an introduction and story from Dr. Hrawbowski and will continue with a panel of 4 UMBC community members representing faculty, staff, and student perspectives who will share their stories related to manhood and masculinity. The dialogue will then open up to all audience members to share their own stories and reflection in small and large group discussions in an effort to explore and unpack the complexities of masculinity.
UMBC’s Healthy Masculinity Campus Conversation will be the kick-off to our 4th semester of the Women’s Center’s Rebuilding Manhood initiative. Additionally, this campus conversation will be the first of several other events and conversations throughout the semester dedicated to promoting healthy, non-violent masculinity and expanding the possibilities of what masculinity can look like for our campus community.
A light reception will begin our event at 6pm in the Skylight Room and resources from the UHS Health Education, Green Dot, and the Relationship Violence Awareness & Prevention program will be available. The campus conversation will begin shortly after 6:15pm with a welcome from a Verizon representative followed by an introduction from Dr. Freeman Hrabowski. The storytellers on the panel members are:
Dr. Shawn Bediako (faculty, Psychology)
Mito Espinoza (staff, Admissions)
Max Barnhart (undergraduate, Political Science major)
Ashley Sweet (undergraduate, Social Work major)
All UMBC community members of any and all genders are invited to be a part of this campus conversation.
