Global Asias Opening Workshop
Kicking off UMBC's Global Asias Initiative
Please join us as we announce the Global Asias Initiative at the Spring Opening Workshop and Reception!
The Opening Workshop will be on Friday, April 5, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts and Humanities Building, Room 234. This event will be an opportunity to bring together faculty, staff, students, and campus partners who are interested in supporting Asians and Asian Americans at UMBC and who want to help shape the study of Asia and Asian America at our university.
CAHSS is the recipient of a $750,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation for the “Global Asias Initiative.” This project will include a series of workshops, lectures, and events over the next two and a half years centered on the framework of Global Asias, a field that reframes the study of Asia by bringing together key parts of Asian Studies, Asian American Studies, and Asian diaspora studies. We are using the grant to consider whether to transition our current Asian Studies program from a more traditional “Asian Studies” model to a “Global Asias” model.
The workshop will explore the concept of Global Asias and consider how what we do at UMBC already might fit into that paradigm. Please RSVP at this Google Forms link (please do not use myUMBC to rsvp!).
