Post-Grad Jobs in Education & Social Justice: Q&A Session
This will be an informal Q&A for juniors, seniors, and any interested students to learn more about Reading Partners, Literacy Lab, and Urban Teachers, and available positions in education after graduation. We'll also discuss how our organizations work to eliminate educational inequities and close achievement and opportunity gaps in the U.S. If you're as passionate about this work as we are, we hope to see you there!
Reading Partners: A a national nonprofit serving K-4 students who are struggling in reading. We provide 1:1 support to students in Baltimore City schools twice a week with the help of community volunteers. We are currently looking for AmeriCorps Members to serve a 10-month service term with us in one of two roles. Site Coordinators directly manage a reading center in schools full-time and work directly with students and volunteers to make significant gains in literacy. Volunteer Coordinators support outreach and bringing in volunteers to our centers so that we can serve more students. You can find our application and additional information about the roles here.
Urban Teachers: We are a four-year teacher preparation and certification program that transforms those interested to teach into truly effective, culturally competent career teachers in urban public schools in Baltimore, DC, and Dallas. Our program includes: 1) A one-year co-teaching residency with stipend and benefits, 2) A two-year master's degree in education from Johns Hopkins, 3) A guaranteed three-year teaching job with full-time salary and benefits, and 4) Three years and 80 hours of 1-on-1 coaching, as well as teaching certification by the end of year three. As a result, those who complete the Urban Teachers program are among the most expert and results-oriented educators in the nation. Learn more and apply at our website: http://urbanteachers.org!
Literacy Lab: The Literacy Lab recognizes that ensuring all students have the chance to read proficiently is an urgent and critical need. Our approach is to provide Pre-K classrooms and elementary schools with evidence-based literacy intervention and full-time literacy tutors to implement the model. With the help of assessment tools, their coaching teams, and The Literacy Lab’s program staff, our tutors help their students become successful readers.
