Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.
I’ve been the social media intern for the career center. It’s been a nice opportunity to help my fellow students find their interests in their career opportunities. My job has been to manage the center’s social media platforms, so through posts, messages, stories, and other digital marketing techniques I help spread the word about job opportunities and resources being offered.
Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I regularly met with my career advisor in my Junior year, sharing my experiences as a photographer and video producer. Over the summer, she told me that there was opening for the social media position, so I emailed the contact responsible for hiring. I sent my resume and received a recommendation from my advisor and soon after I received an interview.
Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?
My past Career Advisor gave me a lot of support and helped me find this position.
What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?
The internship has given me the opportunity to create new marketing strategies, while also seeing the effectiveness of my work. Since joining the team, I’ve helped attract hundreds of new followers, help the center achieve its highest levels of engagement, and had a lot of fun while doing it.
How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
Yes. While my work has help produce great increases in engagement, my favorite thing is that more students are becoming aware of the potential and opportunities. Creating original content that inspires students to take an interest in their careers and make solid connections is what I’m most proud of.
What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Just apply. Sometimes you won’t get the job you were looking for on the first try. Just keep applying.
Have fun and take lots of risks.
Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.
The career center has great career peers and advisors who can make the career search process more manageable. My advisor Kacie Lawrence was my advisor when I worked at OCA Mocha as the video intern. That has been my favorite position so far, and through that experience she helped me find this one.
