Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.
I am an editorial intern for the UMBC Alumni Magazine. I write feature stories that are published on the magazine's website and will be publishing an article that will be in the Spring 2019 print edition of the magazine. I collaborate with my fellow intern and my editor to write mainly science features about faculty on campus. I am sometimes tasked with writing the "Class Notes" section that is also featured in the magazine which highlights alumni accomplishments. Each day, I work on my latest feature piece and interview, document, and write about all of the amazing happenings at UMBC.
Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
Professor Christopher Corbett told my now editor, Jenny O'Grady that I may be a good fit for the program. I was interviewed in Spring 2018 and received an internship offer shortly after.
What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?
I love that I can meet fascinating people on campus and tell their stories. This internship offers me the opportunity to create narratives around a multitude of amazing happenings at UMBC. I am able to meet new people, make great connections, and learn a great deal about journalism along the way.
How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I hope that my articles inform readers about the positive impact that UMBC has had on countless lives and how the University is continuing to inspire people everyday. I also hope that my stories bring joy and recognition to those whom I write about because they certainly deserve it.
What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
It is all about who you know. Go out and build a large network of connections and do your best not to burn any bridges. Always be the hardest working intern because that will pay off in the end.
