Student-Led UMBC Linux Users Group Maintains Public Linux Infrastructure
The Linux Users Group (LUG) has been hard at work expanding infrastructure for the campus and open source community. Started last summer under the leadership of club President Alex Merryman and Vice President Danielle Esposito, LUG maintains a public Linux mirror hosted in the engineering datacenter. With support from the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) for datacenter operations and funding from COEIT for a major hardware upgrade, the mirror provides fast local downloads for major Linux distributions.
The mirror currently serves Arch, Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, and nine other distributions and growing. Last month alone, the server transferred over 32 TB of data to users pointing their package managers at the UMBC mirror.
Want to get involved with hands-on infrastructure? LUG is hosting Server Building 101 this Wednesday at 7:15 PM in PAHB 108. Students will have the chance to take apart a server and learn about what it takes to run a production service like a Linux mirror.
