"We Ain't New to this, We True to This": Teaching Democracy and Citizenship Through Black Educator Oral and Life Histories
UMBC Department of Education Research Seminar Series
Wednesday, March 4, 2026 · 12 - 1 PM
The UMBC Department of Education Research Seminar continues with a presentation by Dr. Brandon Beck, assistant professor in the Department of Education. On the cusp of America's semi quincentennial and the centennial of Black History Month, Dr. Beck's presentation interrogates the systematic marginalization of civic education by positioning Black Life Histories as a vital, culturally sustainable pedagogical resource. Dr. Beck demonstrates how integrating these narratives is not merely additive, but foundational to cultivating a critically engaged and democratically responsible citizenry.
All members of the department, partners/collaborators, and students/faculty from other departments and institutions are invited to attend. Lunch will be provided by the department. Please RSVP by completing this form as soon as possible:
